Chapter 1: Dunes Tales (2018) / Artist in Residence, European Ceramics Context 2018, The Royal Danish Academy, School of Design Bornholm (September- October 2018)

From Bornholm, where I spent most of my time among the dunes, I returned with a fascination with sand. It’s an absolutely fascinating process when random elements begin to exist as sets. Under a microscope the grains of sand are just a chaotic cluster of random shapes and colours but a dune or beach is a coherent body that would never make us question how much its constituent particles may vary.

Chapter 2: Källskär Tales (2019) / Artist in Residence, Källskär, Åland, Finland (July 2019)

Källskär Tales originated during my residency on the uninhabited island of Källskär in the summer 2019. The island is an amazing man’s attempt to merge two absolutely different orders: the Greek order brought there by its former owner, Baron Göran Åkerhielm, and a rough, rocky nature of the northern Baltic coast. And paradoxically, in such a discord, instead of weakening, each order becomes more significant and stronger.

The pieces resulting from the residency are made of two different porcelains which, due to the different shrinking range, are not really supposed to fit together. Given enough time for slow and careful drying and slow and careful firing though, they can merge into one body while still maintaining their distinctiveness.

That has probably been the most important lesson I learnt on the island.
