Some time ago I learnt that my fifth great grand-father, Joseph aka Józef Probst, in the second half of the XVIII century came from Germany to Warsaw to work with the royal plasterers’ team and soon became one of the most recognized stucco decorators of his time.
His son Józef, my fourth great grand-father, also a plasterer, received a prize for his “capital of a composite order” at the Warsaw Fine Arts Exhibition (1825), a couple of months before his death at the age of 33. The jury appreciated “the beauty and precision of the form, the pure style and the accuracy of the finish”.
The Genealogy series is about mixing and combining different cultural and aesthetic DNAs. It is also meant to be a dialogue with my ancestors, an attempt to create a bridge over those 200 years that divides us.
